Light Reflectance Values (LRVs) are an important factor when deciding which colour to use for stair nosing treads. The LRV scale ranges from 0 to 100, with 0 being pure black and 100 being pure white. Building Regulations recommend that the tread colour on stair nosings should have at least 30 LRV points difference from the floorcovering on the stairs. This is important for peoples’ safety, especially those with impaired vision. The contrast between the step edges and the rest of the stairs help to minimise the chance of slips, trips and falls.
With this in mind, Quantum Flooring Solutions has created two new tread colours for its stair nosing range. Quantum’s new tread colours are called Mist and Desert and are both on the higher end of the LRV range. This means that both are on the lighter side of the colour spectrum, with Mist having an LRV of 64 and Desert of 77. Mist can be used alongside dark floorcoverings which have an LRV of 34 and below, and Desert with an even greater range of darker colours from 47 LRV points and below.
These new tread colours mean that Quantum now has a range of 27 separate colours to choose from. This offers a wide choice to specifiers, so that you can find a Quantum tread colour to contrast with literally any floorcovering LRV.
