Light Reflectance Values (LRVs) are an important factor when deciding which colour to use for stair nosing treads. The LRV scale ranges from 0 to 100, with 0 being pure black and 100 being pure white. LRVs apply to all flooring accessories, but they are especially relevant when it comes to floorcoverings and stair nosings.
Building Regulations recommend that the tread colour on stair nosings should have at least 30 LRV points difference from the floorcovering on the stairs. Therefore, light coloured floors with an LRV of above 60 would mean thata flooring contractor should use darker stair nosings with a lower LRV of below 30. Medium ranged floorcoverings offer a choice of both very low and very high LRVs. Meanwhile, dark floorcoverings mean that light coloured stair nosing treads should be used.
In order to add to the options for flooring contractors, Quantum Flooring Solutions is launching two new tread colours called Mist and Desert. Mist has an LRV of 64 and Desert has an LRV of 77. These are both very light coloured treads, meaning that they can be used with darker or medium coloured floorcoverings, with an LRV of below 34 and below 47 respectively. This will mean that Quantum offers an even greater choice on the higher end of the LRV spectrum for stair nosing treads.
